The Bane Chronicles is a compilation of 11 short stories telling the tales of the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane, and co-written by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, and Maureen Johnson. The first ten stories were released in e-book format, and the eleventh tale was added in the print edition, published on November 11, 2014.
Description
It's not easy being Magnus Bane. As a warlock, he's often called upon to fix problems of others. His life has been long, and his loves have been many, and Magnus has a way of making sure he's at the right place at the right—or perhaps wrong—time. The French Revolution, Prohibition, the first great battle between Valentine and the New York Institute... Magnus was there. But smuggling Marie Antoinette out of France is nothing compared to having a first date with Alec Lightwood.
Though Magnus's tale is far from over, these stories shed a little light on his often inscrutable character. What happens when an immortal warlock goes mad? Are all Herondales as problematic as Will? (Answer: yes.) And why was Magnus banned from Peru?
Magnus will never be able to tell all of his tales. No one would believe him. But here are eleven stories that fill in some of the blanks—stories he probably wishes had never gotten out.

- The cover model for Magnus Bane on the original US cover is Remington Hoffman; the model's brother is on the cover of Clockwork Prince as Jem Carstairs.
- In City of Heavenly Fire, Magnus gave Alec Lightwood a notebook containing stories that shaped his life, which he wrote in the weeks following their breakup. The Bane Chronicles is either all or a part of the stories contained in this notebook itself.[1][2]
- The print edition features a bonus story (The Voicemail of Magnus Bane) and 10 illustrated scenes, one for each story, drawn by Cassandra Jean.
- The Rise of the Hotel Dumort and The Fall of the Hotel Dumort was originally teased as one story: The Rise and Fall of the Hotel Dumort. Its separation may have either resulted from or caused the removal of certain stories from the original set of 10 online released e-books.
- No Immortal Can Keep a Secret was originally intended to be released as the seventh story on October 15, 2013, co-written with Maureen Johnson. However, it was removed from the final compilation at one point while the first few installments were still being released in e-book form after their expert on turn of the century Vienna dropped out.[3] (Description: Magnus at the turn of the 20th century decides to try this new "psychoanalysis" with Dr. Freud. But clearly the doctor has no experience to help deal with a centuries-old warlock with a very complicated dating history and some very unusual father issues.)
- The Letter, for which no description and spoilers were given, was supposed to be a separate installment released as the tenth story on December 31, 2013.[4] It was instead worked into City of Heavenly Fire and removed from the chronicles.[5] It may have had something to do with the story about Michael Wayland that Robert Lightwood told his son in the book, presumed because the artist Cassandra Jean once pointed out a letter in Michael's hand in one of her Flower cards.[6][7]
- The Bane Chronicles Russian translation was divided and distributed as a trilogy. The first book contains the first three stories from the series and went on sale in December 2014, and the following installments were released months after.[8]
